This summer, Tendercare launched our community Summer Series which featured three special meetups designed to bring together our patients, caregivers, and the Tendercare team in spaces that are accessible, supported, and welcoming.
For many of the families we serve, opportunities to gather in community are seldom. Between medical schedules, accessibility barriers, and the day-to-day demands of caregiving, it’s not always easy to get out, try new things, and connect with others who understand your experiences. That’s why these events are so meaningful. They’re about more than just the location or activity. They’re about connection and creating low-stress moments together.
Why Accessible Community Events Matter
We know that good care is about more than what happens at home or in a medical setting—it’s also about fostering social connections, building support networks, and making sure everyone has a chance to enjoy experiences that many take for granted.
When we host meetups, our goal is to:
- Encourage social connection and reduce isolation for both caregivers and patients.
- Create safe spaces where accessibility and inclusion are the starting point, not an afterthought.
- Give families confidence to explore new environments with a supportive community by their side.
- Strengthen relationships between Tendercare patients, caregivers, and our staff.
It’s amazing to see the smiles, the conversations, and the way people open up when they feel both welcomed and understood.
Where We Went This Summer
June – Holland Park
We kicked off our Summer Series at Holland Park, where families enjoyed accessible play spaces and the chance to relax in a casual, friendly environment. The park’s accessible gathering spaces and unique playground equipment made it easy for patients and caregivers to participate at their own pace—whether that meant joining group activities or simply enjoying the day outdoors.
June – Freedom Trail Park
Later in June, we headed to Freedom Trail Park. This spot quickly became a favorite for its soft turf and ramped play areas, which made it possible for more people to join in the fun. Despite the summer heat, our group made the most of the morning with laughter, shared stories, and plenty of playtime.
July – The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis
We wrapped up the series in July with a trip to The Children’s Museum, welcoming over 10 families for a day of discovery and hands-on fun. The museum’s wide range of exhibits and activities meant there was something for everyone—from exploring science and history to getting creative in interactive spaces. It was also a chance for many families to try a new venue they might not have visited otherwise.
The Impact
The feedback we’ve received has been inspiring. Families have told us how much they appreciate having spaces where they don’t have to explain their needs, where accessibility is already considered, and where they can meet others who share similar experiences. These meetups also give caregivers and patients the chance to meet Tendercare office staff face-to-face, strengthening the bonds that keep our care relationships strong.
Looking Ahead
The success of our Summer Series has made it clear: these events matter. We’re already planning for fall, with more opportunities for connection, fun, and support on the way.
Whether it’s exploring a new museum, enjoying time in a park, or finding another creative way to gather, we’re committed to making community connection part of the Tendercare experience. Because when we bring people together, we’re not just creating events—we’re building a stronger, more connected Tendercare family.
