Melissa and Abel’s Journey with Habitat for Humanity

At Tendercare, we witness life-changing moments every day, but the story of Melissa and her son Abel is particularly special. Thanks to Habitat for Humanity, Melissa and Abel recently moved into their brand-new home, marking a fresh start for their family.

This past spring, several of our incredible Tendercare employees volunteered to help build the house, working alongside Habitat to create a safe, accessible space for this deserving family. The joy and relief on move-in day were unmistakable—especially when Melissa showed off their new walk-in shower, a feature she knows will be life-changing for their daily routine.

As Melissa shared with a grateful sigh, “This is going to make everything so much better.” For families like hers, small changes in their environment can have an enormous impact on their quality of life and support.

Our Director of Advocacy & Community Relations, Darcy Tower, reflected on this experience, saying, “The work we do is often a lot, hard and also beautiful, and sometimes all at the same time. These pictures remind me that the presence and care each one of us brings to the patients we support sparks change one person at a time. It matters.”

Building More Than a House: The Tendercare Team's Involvement

The story of Melissa and Abel’s new home goes beyond just bricks and mortar – it’s about the community of support surrounding them. Our staff not only provides daily in-home care but also showed up to literally help build the foundation of this new beginning. From installing windows to cheering at the home’s completion, the Tendercare team was there every step of the way.

These moments remind us that our mission extends beyond healthcare – we are building relationships and creating change that makes life better for our patients and their families.

A Brighter Future for Melissa and Abel

Now that Melissa and Abel are settled into their new home, we are overjoyed to see them thriving in a space that will bring more ease and comfort to their daily lives. Abel, who requires specific medical support, will benefit greatly from the accessibility features of their new home, especially the walk-in shower that Melissa lovingly showed off to our team.
