Progress, Not Perfection: Mila’s Story

Success for medically complex individuals isn’t defined by traditional milestones. It’s found in the small, meaningful moments that often go unseen — the progress, the peace, the smiles that tell a story all their own.

A moment of calm in a noisy world.
A word spoken after countless tries.
A smile of connection when anxiety fades.

These are the victories that matter most, the ones that reflect true growth and resilience. When children like Mila are given the right tools, inclusive opportunities, and unwavering support, they don’t just meet expectations. They redefine them.

Meet Mila. 💜

She’s a 4-year-old full of sparkle, a lover of surprises, glitter, books, and all things purple. Mila is always on the move, eager to explore the world around her.

Mila was born with cerebral palsy and complex heart conditions. Early on, her doctors weren’t sure she’d ever sit up on her own, crawl, or walk. But from day one, Mila and her parents have met every challenge head-on. Through Medicaid-covered therapies including speech, physical, occupational, and feeding therapy, Mila worked hard, often through tears, and by age two, she could finally sit up by herself.

That moment changed everything.

It was her “a-ha” moment, proof of what she could do. From there, she kept going, taking small, determined steps with her walker, surprising even her doctors. With eight therapy sessions a week, Mila eventually began walking independently.

Today, Mila is unstoppable. She plays soccer, takes ballet, rides horses, and attends preschool. She’s even on track to transition into a general education classroom with the supports she needs to thrive.

Her mom, Capri, says it best:

“I think it's important to note that there's so much that goes on as medical families beyond what you can see. In the recent pictures, she is so happy and active. But what people don't realize is that even though she ‘looks healthy,’ we still have to be on high alert 24/7. She still needs to be attached to monitors anytime she’s asleep because she stops breathing, and she still needs around-the-clock care to ensure safety. But with that, she’s able to thrive.”

Mila’s Circle of Care

Mila’s family has worked hard to build her circle of support. Her ballet teacher, currently studying occupational therapy, weaves therapy techniques into each dance lesson. Her Tendercare nurse is another key part of that circle.

Because of her respiratory needs, Mila’s nurse is trained for emergency interventions and coordinates closely with her medical and therapy teams. She attends appointments and ensures that therapy goals carry over into everyday life, from practicing stair-climbing at the park to exploring the zoo, all while strengthening Mila’s independence and confidence.

What’s Next for Mila

Right now, Mila is preparing for heart surgery. The hardest part will be slowing down. Her recovery will temporarily limit activity, which isn’t easy for a girl who loves to move.

So as she faces this next challenge, we’re sending all the purple, glittery thoughts her way. ✨

This surgery is a step toward more energy, more endurance, and more movement—everything Mila loves most.

For Mila, and for so many children like her, progress, not perfection, will always be the measure of success.
