Helping Our Families Through SNAP Uncertainty

Information regarding the funding of SNAP is back and forth between agencies, federal government and state governments. At the beginning of writing this update, the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration (FSSA) announced that, due to the ongoing federal government shutdown, SNAP benefits would not be issued for November 2025. By the end of writing, there was a federal judge who blocked this decision and ordered that backup funding be utilized to give recipients their SNAP benefits by end of day on Monday, November 3rd. Please note that there could be additional changes between now and publication.

FSSA stated that regardless, EBT cards will continue to work for any remaining balances, and Medicaid and TANF benefits are not impacted.

How to Help: Donating to Food Pantries

Those who are able to give can make an immediate impact. Food pantries are in high demand and appreciate donations that are both practical and thoughtful.

Here are some suggestions shared by people who use them:

  • Boxed milk for cereal and cooking

  • Oil, spices, salt, and pepper

  • Can openers for canned goods

  • Coffee, tea, sugar, and flour

  • Fresh produce, meat, eggs, and butter

  • Feminine hygiene products and dish soap

  • Dog and cat food for families with pets

  • Cake mix, frosting, and candles for birthdays

Every contribution helps a neighbor in need. Small acts of generosity add up to something powerful when a community comes together.
